Seahorses And Mermaids
New floral art photography in my shop
As an artist I’m always on a journey.
I keep searching and trying new things. I love to create and challenge my way to work with flowers. I love surreal and that is one of the reasons why I have began to create more unreal scenes with flowers too. Flowers are important ingredients in my art and they offer me a chance to explore and develop my expression. This time I created something that takes you to underwater world.
Just before Covid-19 spread in Europe, February 2020 I visited Copenhagen and met there one of my lovely flower friends, Rose. While I was walking back to my hotel I found one charming antique shop that was a true treasure island. I walked in and saw many lovely things but one thing caught my eye. An old dried seahorse. Never seen it before. I walked straight to it. The shop owner was amazed about this, no one had done it before. I was the first one. I felt very strongly about this little creature.
I had many questions in my mind. I asked the owner how old this seahorse can be and he estimated that it can be anything between 30 years- 100 years or older. It wasn’t in perfect shape anymore. This little old decayed seahorse had been dried very long time ago. I knew I had something very special in my hands. I would never ever buy new dried seahorses in tourist shops or other places. But this one. It was a message from the past, it didn’t have a home so I had to take it with me and give a home to it and continue its story.
When I came home I googled information about seahorses and unfortunately seahorses are threatened with extinction like so many species at the moment. They swim slow, most of them are monogamous. They are experts in hiding and they have good camouflage capabilities (and so do mermaids). Seahorses live in seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs in coastal shallow waters. Seahorse males become pregnant ( yes they are only species that do so) Seahorse remain faithful to its mate. So if the mate disappear, they stay alone.
I felt horrible. I had bought something that I would never ever show anywhere. But if you find one in antique shop it is surely very old. I would never ever buy a new dried seahorse from the tourist shop. As I wrote before seahorses are threatened with extinction. There are different kind of reasons for that and you can read about it here.
I have to say this seahorse has haunted me since February 2020. I decided to make this piece of art to respect and cherish their life. You can find this floral art photography print in my online shop in 6 sizes and I will donate 10% of the photography sale to wildlife conservation. We all make mistakes but what really matters is what we do afterwards, this is my way to show my respect to the nature.
