My signature flower design
Secret flower base technique
How do you do it ?
I have heard this question more than once. I decided to share my signature flower base technique because I can see there are so many who are trying to achieve similar floral photography as I do. Maybe this helps you to find your own signature aesthetic but of course things take time to progress. Or what do you think? If you want to learn it well, you can reserve a 1:1 or a small group workshop with me.
For me flowers are ingredients and material that I love. I create a flower work for my camera and I have everything put in right places before I take a photo. That is a reason why I have developed different techniques to arrange flowers for camera. Technique have to be hidden of course. I don’t change composition or add flowers in postproduction. For me it is important to have this skill, I can do good compositions with flowers, I am an artisan with flowers. With my photography I try to get as painterly as I can.
My inspiration comes from Dutch Golden Age painters and their use of light. I am also very fascinated about surreal and in many of my works I try go beyond normal and real. When I’m working I’m having a dialog with my flowers. They guide me. I think it is very important to define your relationship with flowers and your technique. That is when you get closer more your own signature floral design and photography.
Life and death is very present when I work with flowers. I have said that I got flowers as a heritage from my mom who died suddenly 2016. That is the year when I seriously began to learn to work with flowers and photograph them. Working with these beauties helped me through difficult time like painting that I was also doing a lot during that time. My first flower photography related exhibition was called Kesken Juhlien ( Leaving party before it is over). The year was 2017. It was about how I got through sorrow of death of my mother. Sorrow never leaves you though but it gets more colors and doesn’t feel so overwhelming. In exhibition I had paintings, photographs of flower arrangements, ceramics and real flower arrangements that wilted during the exhibition. That was a beginning for my journey I’m now on.
But what is the flower technique? Here we go, it is very simple. Not so many words needed.
So that is my secret flower arrangement base technique. Simple but works so well. Go and try!
Of course you must paint the board time to time because it gets dirty and as we all know photoshopping takes time so we like to avoid it, haha. This board is in poor state just before my vacation, you can see I have been working.
